Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC)
The Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) provides systematic instruction in skills that visually impaired students cannot learn incidentally through observation. The nine areas are: compensatory skills (Braille, assistive technology), orientation and mobility, social interaction, independent living, recreation and leisure, career education, assistive technology, sensory efficiency, and self-determination. These skills supplement the academic curriculum to ensure students achieve independence and success in all areas of life.
The ultimate goal of the ECC is to ensure that students with visual impairments develop into confident, capable adults who can pursue their educational and career aspirations, live independently, and participate fully in their communities. By addressing the unique learning needs created by vision loss, the ECC helps level the playing field and opens doors to opportunity.
